-
Sarah Brown, Sylacauga
College sophomore - Auburn University
For me, success has always been centered around two things: academics and music. If you asked elementary school-aged Sarah what she would be when she grew up, she would say a rockstar with a degree.
Although my outlook on life has changed much since then, my view of success and hopes for my future have stayed relatively consistent. -
Ashley Hawks, Gadsden
Gadsden State Community College
Sometimes life can get in the way of your hopes and dreams. You get busy, have kids, and things just happen. Everyone at some point must decide, is this going to be the time for me? Is it my time to learn and grow? Just like that I got busy and had kids, and it seemed like things just kept happening. One day I had enough of waiting and putting off my future. I accomplished great things once I made the decision to go back to school. I graduated from Gadsden State with a degree in Medical Coding! I do not want to stop there; I aspire for more. I want to prove to myself.

Everyone goes through obstacles at some point in their life—I have overcome many of my own. Despite financial problems, I am determined to pursue a degree in clinical psychology at the University of Alabama.
One of my biggest goals is to become a clinical psychologist. My dedication is reflected by my personal experiences and desire to help others in need. If I become a psychologist, I will use my knowledge to support others who are struggling with mental health issues. Besides having a focus on psychology, I wish to study drawing and painting, mastering the different styles to create meaningful art. I dream of establishing a loving family of my own while cherishing the bonds I already have.

Zahniyah Kirby, Anniston
Tuskegee University
I have been accepted into Tuskegee University and will major in Psychology. My interest in Psychology comes from my real-life experiences and is dear to my heart. I am in therapy for secondary trauma after my exposure to the traumatic experiences of my younger sisters. My dad now has full custody of my sisters, and we are all in therapy.
Our therapist is amazing and has made a big difference in our lives. We are a lot happier and are working towards forgiveness. After going through this experience, I now aspire to become a psychologist and help children work through similar situations.

Jamirah Korsah, Auburn
UAB
At my fifth grade graduation, they were handing out awards to students for many different things. I wasn’t expecting to get anything, but when they called my name for the best written essay in our class, I was shocked to say the least. I was so proud of myself. To this day, I still brag about it and I still have the medal.
For my major, I was stuck in between Neuroscience and Cancer Biology. I was also worried that I wouldn’t be accepted into the program because I didn’t originally apply with those majors. I compared the pre-requisites for pre-med to the courses for each major and decided on Cancer Biology. I was proud of my decision, because Cancer has affected everyone at some point in their life.

Millicent Townsend, Enterprise
Enterprise State Community College
Growing up in Florida and Alabama, I enjoyed nature and a simple life. Prior to 2022 I was continually active each summer in camps and Upward with Enterprise First Methodist Church. I had to stop playing sports due my asthma and because there were not enough girls my age to create enough teams.
Early on I wanted to work in the field of Botany/Agriscience. For my goals, to get to college, earn my associate’s degree and get a good job.
My goals and aspirations are simple and small, but mightily to me.

Salaam Natsar, Huntsville
College sophomore, Calhoun Community College
Born at 1lb 7oz, even the smallest baby products were too big; my clothes were handmade, and I was syringe-fed. This taught me early on that the world isn't always accommodating, but I learned to adapt.
I work full-time as a Corporate Support assistant at ProjectXYZ, a military contracting company that also specializes in community investment, auto manufacturing, and broadcasting media. I have worked here since the summer of 2022, initially as an intern until I was hired full-time in August 2024.
